Your First Pickleball Tournament: How to Prepare

Your first pickleball tournament feels different from regular play before you even hit the first ball.

Start by entering an appropriate division. Competitive, close matches will teach you much more than being overwhelmed above your current game.

If you are playing doubles, practice with your actual partner. Talk about middle balls, returns, positioning and how you communicate when momentum changes.

Train for the rhythm of tournaments too. You may play a hard match, sit around, then need to be ready again. Your warm-up routine matters.

Pack properly: water, snacks, an extra shirt, appropriate shoes, paddle, backup paddle if you have one, and anything you normally need for a long day.

Most importantly, set a useful goal. Winning is fun, but “we have to medal” can make a first tournament miserable. A better first goal is to communicate well, compete every game, identify what breaks down under pressure and leave knowing exactly what to train next.

Tournaments are feedback with a scoreboard.
