Is Pickleball Good Exercise? Fitness and Social Benefits

A lot of people start pickleball because a friend talks them into it. Then something interesting happens: they realize they have been moving for two hours without thinking of it as a workout.

Pickleball involves repeated starts, stops, lateral movement, reaching, balance and hand-eye coordination. The intensity can also be adjusted, which makes the sport accessible to a wide range of players.

There is also the simple benefit of consistency. The best exercise program is not very useful if you hate doing it. Pickleball gives people a reason to come back because the activity is attached to a game, friends and competition.

Pickleball Canada’s 2026 participation survey found that 85% of respondents cited fun as a reason they play, while 48% cited health and fitness. That combination explains a lot of the sport’s appeal.

The social side matters too. Players develop regular groups, meet people they would not otherwise know and build a weekly routine around being active together.

Competition can be motivating as well. You start wanting to move faster because you want to reach the ball. Fitness becomes connected to a purpose.

Pickleball is still a sport, so warm up, wear appropriate footwear, build your volume gradually and listen to your body. But for many people it solves a simple problem: it makes movement something to look forward to.
